Japanese Government MEXT Scholarships 2027 for Sri Lankan Students – Fully Funded | Apply by 18 May 2026

The Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho – MEXT) Scholarships 2027 are now open for eligible Sri Lankan students. Applications must be submitted online by 18 May 2026. These prestigious, fully funded scholarships offer Sri Lankan students the chance to study at recognised Japanese universities and institutions across four programmes — Undergraduate, College of Technology (KOSEN), Master’s and PhD. Japan’s MEXT scholarships are among the most comprehensive in the world, covering tuition, living costs and airfare.

Scholarship Programmes Available

• 🎓 Undergraduate Scholarship — Natural Sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Architecture, Biotechnology, Maritime Engineering). Minimum 3 passes in G.C.E. A/L 2025 in Mathematical Stream (Chemistry, Physics, Combined Mathematics). Duration: 5 years including 1 year Japanese language course.
• 🎓 College of Technology (KOSEN) Scholarship — Technical and engineering education. Fields: Mechanical, Electrical, Information and Network Engineering, Materials Engineering, Architecture, Civil Engineering.
• 🎓 Master’s (Research Students) Scholarship — Postgraduate research across engineering, science, technology and more.
• 🎓 PhD (Research Students) Scholarship — Doctoral research across recognised fields at Japanese universities.

What the Scholarship Covers

• ✅ Monthly allowance of approximately 117,000 yen (approx. LKR 230,000) for undergraduate scholars, plus regional supplements
• ✅ Full tuition, entrance and matriculation fees waived
• ✅ Economy class return airfare between Sri Lanka and Japan
• ✅ Free or subsidised university accommodation
• ⚠️ Important: Bring at least USD 2,000 upon arrival — first payment is made 1–1.5 months after arrival

Eligibility Requirements

• Must be a citizen of Sri Lanka
• Undergraduate: Minimum 3 passes in G.C.E. A/L 2025 in the Mathematical Stream
• Must not be enrolled as an internal student at a Sri Lankan state university (for Undergraduate)
• Good knowledge of English (Japanese language training provided)
• All applications must be submitted online only — no postal submissions accepted
• Late, incomplete or false applications will be rejected or disqualified
