The Department of Examinations Sri Lanka has officially released the instructions for school candidates applying for the GCE Advanced Level (A/L) Examination 2026. The online application window closed on 24 April 2026 with no extensions permitted under any circumstance. Eligibility – Who Can Apply as a School Candidate?
- Must be currently enrolled in an Advanced Level class (Year 1 or Year 2) in a registered school
- Students who have remained in A/L classes for more than three years are not eligible as school candidates
- Must hold a valid NIC, passport, or driving licence for identification during the exam
- Candidates without an NIC must visit the Department of Examinations in person to obtain a temporary identification number
- Students who have left school and hold a leaving certificate must apply as private candidates

Application Process – Step by Step
- School principal logs in to the Department of Examinations online portal (doenets.lk) using school credentials
- Update the school profile — verify address, contact details, and examination city
- Enter each candidate’s details carefully, double-checking subjects and medium of instruction
- For students with special educational needs, enter details via the “Special Education Need Students” link
- Submit the online application before the closing time on 24 April 2026
- Print one copy, obtain signatures from both student and principal, then deliver to the Zonal Education Office before 5 May 2026 at 10:00 AM
⚠️ Subject and medium selections cannot be changed after submission. School-enrolled students who try to apply as private candidates may face legal action and suspension of results.
